Training opportunities could boost freelance talent
Monday, 08 February 2010
Freelance consultants and contractors might benefit from an expansion of funding for apprenticeships.

Charles Prew, Chief Executive Officer at Barcelo UK, suggested that policymakers must seek to harness the specialist skills of young people through training placements - which could interest self-employed people who are keen to share their expertise. He stated: "The one thing I would ask an incoming government of either party to do is put more money into small businesses who will take on an apprentice."

Mr Prew went on to assert that a national skills academy would be a good idea, with training playing a vital role in young people's development.

In addition, the alleviation of unfair business taxation might be one way to encourage micro-enterprises to take on more voluntary recruits.

Freelancers with knowledge in a niche area might want to offer training to university graduates, which may be a good way of building long-term contacts and improving mentoring skills.
