Remote working could give freelancers an advantage
Monday, 08 February 2010
Freelance consultants and contractors arguably have a competitive advantage over their office-bound counterparts because of their ability to carry out remote working.

According to Mark Lewis, senior EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) director of marketing and alliances at Riverbed, there are some harmful scenarios where permanent staff are unable to attend a workplace. He noted that any situation where people are unable to access systems "either remotely or locally is naturally going to lead to decline in work productivity".

It could be said that freelancers, by contrast, have no such problems in terms of carrying out their business affairs in trying circumstances - including adverse weather.

A recent oneDrum survey may interest micro-business operators and contractors, as it found that remote working can increase productivity and accommodate thought-sensitive tasks more effectively.

With a number of technologies at freelancers' disposal - such as mobile broadband and Voice over Internet Protocol - it might be a good time to take advantage of remote working opportunities.
